It was a mixed day for Maree Basketball Club on the national stage on Saturday, as the senior men went down to a third consecutive defeat in the Superleague, but the club’s senior women made it two wins from two in division one.
The women’s side took on Ulster University Elks in Calasanctius College in Oranmore, and in a real ding-dong battle, Joe Shields’ side claimed a 76-68 win.

It was a frustrating start to the new All Ireland League for both Galway sides. Galwegians got nothing to show for their efforts after a highly entertaining division 2A game at Blackrock on Saturday, losing 30-20 having led with five minutes remaining, while Corinthians were unable to capitalise on home support, losing to Belfast Harlequins by 11-15 in division 2B.
Corinthians now travel to Dublin to face Greystones on Saturday, while Galwegians host their first league match of the season when UL Bohemians, relegated from divison 1B last season, visit Crowley Park. In Athlone, Buccaneers open their division 1B season when Naas visit Dubarry Park - all matches at 2.30pm.
