Mulkerrins breaks 52-year record

Diarmuid Mulkerrins became the first Galway man to win the 60x30 U21 All-Ireland final in the 52-years history of the competition.

The victory was all the more significant because it is Mulkerrins’ first year out of minor after winning the All Ireland Minor title in 60x30 last year.

Sunday's 21-6 21-5 victory over Kilkenny's Dylan Caulfield ensures he will be playing in the intermediate grade next year.

Mulkerrins was one of three Galway players competing at the finals, but both Niamh Heffernan and Willie Corcoran fell short in their quest for an All-Ireland title.

Corcoran lost the final of the Emerald Masters B singles 19-21 11-21 to Wexford's Stephen Murphy. The Salthill man will be playing in the 60x30 Emerald Masters B Doubles All Ireland final in a few weeks’ time.

Meanwhile Claregalway's Niamh Heffernan fell short in her attempt to win an All-Ireland crown, losing to Kildare's Leah Doyle 12-21 and 1-21. The pair have faced each other on numerous occasions, most recently in the One Wall World Championship final in Minnesota where Doyle prevailed in a tiebreaker, but the Claregalway woman claimed her revenge by winning the World Championship 40x20 title a few days later.
