Moycullen shooters dazzle Neptune

Moycullen Basketball are preparing for a tough weekend's action. On Saturday night they travel to Dublin for a cup clash with the reigning Superleague champs UCD, and on Monday they return to Galway for a hotly-anticipated game against Swords Thunder at 3pm in the NUI Galway Kingfisher Gym.

They will go into both matches hugely boosted by last weekend's dazzling shooting display which saw them stun league-powerhouse Neptune in the men's Superleague, winning 111-90 in Cork.

After consecutive weeks in which Moycullen struggled to find their scoring touch, Moycullen fired on all cylinders on Saturday night, pouring in 18 three-pointers, and shooting a remarkable 51 per cent from the field.

Moycullen coach John Cunningham said a win was important having felt they left the game behind them the previous weekend.

“I said last week that our problem was putting the ball in the basket, but the guys certainly came up with the answer to that tonight,” he said.

Moycullen took an early lead when veteran Dylan Cunningham connected on back-to-back three-pointers, forcing the home side to quickly rethink their defensive strategy.

The Cork outfit kept themselves in the contest through some excellent fastbreaks, and through the deft scoring touch of American star, Lehmon Colbert.

With the game played at a ferocious pace, it was a night for offensive displays, and the second half picked up right where the first had left off.

In the third quarter Moycullen did a better job on the defensive end, and their pressure prevented Colbert from producing any scoring rhythm in the third quarter. It helped propel Moycullen into a 17 point lead, which never really looked like surrendering.

The fourth period was much the same, and Neptune could not withstand the onslaught.

Moycullen had scoring contributions from all 10 of their players, including up-and-coming star, Dara Kenna, who scored his first Superleague basket in the game’s closing minutes.

Next weekend sees Moycullen play two games. On Saturday night they travel to Dublin for a cup clash with the reigning Superleague champs UCD. Then on Monday 29 they return to Galway for a hotly-anticipated game against Swords Thunder at 3pm in the NUI Galway Kingfisher Gym.
