Sportsground ready for return of the Clan

Some 3,000 supporters are expected at the Galway Sportsground when Connacht open their 2021 home season with a visit of London Irish on Friday (5.30pm).

In this second of Connacht's pre-season fixtures, coach Andy Friend says it is another opportunity to continue to fine-tune his squad's seasonal mantra after the recent 52-39 defeat to Worcester Warriors in England.

With Covid regulations only allowing 3,500 fans in Castlebar's McHale Park, the Connacht council, in conjunction with Croke Park, decided to move the game to GAA HQ which will allow for 18,000 fans, a significantly higher number.

Having seen off Waterford last Sunday in some style, Galway still have a decent chance of claiming top spot in division 1A, and perhaps a place in a decider further down the road, when they travel to take on Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday (1.45pm).

Currently level on six points with Tipperary, Galway are behind on the head-to-head tie-breaker after the defeat in Semple Stadium. As a result they will need to better Tipperary’s result away to Waterford, a match which takes place at the same time in Walsh Park.
