Galway ladies advance to quarter-final after second-half goal attack

Three second-half goals in as many minutes put Galway ladies on the road to victory over Donegal in Saturday's All Ireland senior championship round two fixture at Markievicz Park.

It now ensures Gerry Fahy's ladies will progress to the quarter-final and, having already beaten Kerry the previous week, they are will face the runners up of group one, either Mayo or Armagh, who meet in round three on Saturday.

Galway had found themselves down by five against Donegal at half-time, but from the first attack after the resumption, Nicola Ward grabbed the first goal. Then second-half substitute Ailish Morrissey grabbed the second, and then also the third from a Megan Glynn pass, turning tables completely.

Manager Gerry Fahy said two wins on the trot was hugely encouraging, particularly because Galway had failed to fire in the first half against Donegal, and needed to be more adventurous in the second half.

"We had to gamble, so we took Nicola back out to midfield and I think that swung things in our favour, and then Ailish banged in two great goals," Fahy said. "Everyone upped the ante in the second half."

"Moving both Louise and Nicola Ward provided the injection and more pace, while Morrissey finished the chances. But everyone played a part today, and they needed to."

Donegal had taken control in the first half, leading 1-6 to 0-4 at the break. They led 1-2 to 0-2 with Katy Herron blasting home an 11th minute goal. Olivia Divilly scored two vital points for Galway in the second quarter, but Donegal maintained their advantage heading into the second half.

However, Fahy's gamble to move Ward and introduce Morrissey after the break paid off. Galway hit the front and held on, while Donegal captain Niamh McLaughlin was unlucky to see her effort rattle the crossbar.
