Galway u-21s look to raise the bar again against favourites Kildare

The Galway u-21 footballers will head to Tullamore this Saturday (2pm) to take on Kildare in the All-Ireland semi-final knowing they will have to improve significantly on their Connacht final display if they are to get past a big, tall and physical Kildare outfit.

Galway, who are under the management team of Alan Flynn, Paul Clancy, Declan Meehan, Alan Mulholland and Donál Ó Fatharta, have made strides in all their games to date, from their wins over Sligo and Mayo up to their extra-time win over Roscommon two weeks ago.

In October last year FAI chief executive officer John Delaney stated the association's intention of fielding one team from Galway in the League of Ireland and meetings continue to take place about making this a reality for the 2014 season.

The revelations regarding the possibility of a sponsorship deal being brokered with the Comer brothers brought plenty of local speculation, but uncertainty still surrounds the direction this proposed new Galway club will take. Representatives of Salthill Devon, Mervue United, Galway United Supporters Trust, and the Galway FA all attended a meeting last week with FAI officials.

It has been a good season for the Renmore team. They won the Connacht Junior League and progressed to the quarter-final of the Irish Hockey Challenge Cup but were defeated by an experienced Clonmel outfit.

The weather was absolutely Baltic in Tuam stadium last Saturday evening for the Galway and Mayo U-21 Connacht semi-final.

Some locals from around Corofin, Cortoon, Killererin and Annaghdown, subsequently admitted under duress, that they headed straight from the venue to the "leaba" with hot water bottles in tow to try and warm up their aging bones.
