Handball titles for Moycullen

Moycullen handballers claimed three All-Ireland titles at the weekend.

Desmond Conneely, Martin Mulkerrins and Proinsíos Maughan were the gold medal winners, while world title holder Morgan Darcy was forced to settle for silver.

On Saturday in Gortnamona, Belfast, Desmond Conneely proved far too strong for Armagh’s Jordan Murtagh, claiming his first All-Ireland title, 40x20 u-15 singles, in convincing fashion,15-1 15-4.

In Mullingar on Sunday Martin Mulkerrins faced Monaghan’s Terry McElvaney in the All-Ireland u-21 final. Despite a promising start, which saw the players level at eight points each, McElvaney could not match the Moycullen man for power and speed and Mulkerrins pushed on to a 21-13 win in the first, followed by an impressive 21-2 victory in the second to collect the title.

Proinsíos Maughan took to the courts in Tuamgreaney looking to win his first All-Ireland at the Silver Master’s B grade. Maughan was quickest off the mark and his clever use of the court saw him take the first 21-12 before holding his nerve to close out the second by 21-15.

In Mullingar Morgan Darcy contested the Ruby Masters against Armagh’s Seamas McGrath who took the first 21-13. However Darcy took control in the second and, with some excellent serving coupled with clever passing shots, went on to win game two, 21-9. In the ensuing tie-break the momentum see-sawed from one player to the other and at 18-19 (to McGrath ) the game could have gone either way, but it was the Armagh man who took the honours on this occasion.
