A Claddagh man was sentenced to one month in jail at Galway District Court this week after a pit bull terrier he had been walking savagely attacked another dog, causing “horrific” injuries.

I brought her a bag of apples on our first ‘date’. Not very romantic, I hear you say. True. And not very generous. Also true (Tesco special offer – one pound for a ‘family bag’). I was merely continuing a tradition. She was Anne Gregory and during her childhood at Coole Park, “every year John Quinn, Grandma’s great friend in New York, used to send a great case of apples to us.” So it is recorded in Anne’s beautiful book Me and Nu, Childhood at Coole. ‘Nu’ was Anne’s sister, Catherine. If you haven’t read Me and Nu, treat yourself to a copy for the New Year. It is still in print after nearly 40 years.

Rahan Mummers from Co Offaly retained their title as champions in the senior event at New Inn Mummers’ Festival last weekend, while Lackagh Junior Mummers were the big winners in the junior event.
New Inn Leisure Centre was packed on Saturday night for the senior event. The victorious Rahan Group produced a highly polished and entertaining show, and shaded the verdict over a strong Lackagh group, with the Kilnadeema Mummers taking third prize.

The Pope’s children are 30. As 2009 dawns it will be 30 years since the Pope went around the Racecourse in Ballybrit and told the young people of Ireland that he loved them. But the young people at Ballybrit were not the Pope’s children. The young people of Ballybrit in 1979 are anything from 45 to 55 now. They were well able to cheer and clap and sing loudly in 1979. The Pope’s children are a different generation.
