A young man was conned into handing over more than €5,000 for the purchase of a vehicle which had been up for sale on a country road and had been reported stolen in England two years previously, the Galway District Court heard this week.

Owen Maughan with an address as 56 Ros Geal, Rahoon, was summoned to appear before Judge Mary Fahy last Monday for the offence of dishonestly by deception inducing Thomas O’Toole to pay €5,200 in cash for a vehicle that had been stolen with the intention of making gain on September 29, 2006, at Seershin, Furbo, Spiddeal.

Richard Martin jr decided to leave Ireland for Canada in 1833. The younger son of Colonel Richard ‘Humanity Dick’ Martin, MP, of Ballinahinch, he had expected to inherit some of the family property. However his older brother Thomas — already deeply in debt —broke the entail on the family estates in Connemara, leaving Richard with few prospects. Together with his wife, Emily Kirwan, and their six young children (a seventh would be born in 1834), he emigrated, settling at Grand River, Ontario. Richard died aged 80 in 1878, having lived long enough to see his family grow and prosper far more than would have been likely had they remained in Ireland.

A taxi driver was forced to call gardai after a young Mayo woman became abusive and refused to pay the fare. The ex-student then started “swiping” at gardai with her dancing shoes, the Galway District Court heard this week.

Retail worker Orla McAndrew (20) with an address in Renmore appeared before Judge Mary Fahy last Monday and pleaded guilty to the charge of obstructing gardai on August 23, 2008, at Glenn Na Ri, Dublin Road. A charge for failing to obey garda orders was withdrawn.

Dr Patrick Delassus has been appointed head of research at GMIT. Dr Delassus is a member of the senior executive of the institute and his brief extends to the management and leadership of the research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional engagement strategy of GMIT.

Dr Delassus managed the department of mechanical and industrial engineering at GMIT’s Dublin Road campus for seven years. He has been engaged in research for 12 years, focusing mainly on biomedical engineering, marine engineering, and diverse product design projects for industry.
