Galway Mountain Rescue team leader Ronan Concannon and team PRO John Bourke would like to thank the people of Galway for their generosity in contributing to the team’s annual bucket collection held recently. The annual bucket collection is an extremely important fundraising activity for the organisation, and is used to replace rescue equipment, first aid materials, and to operate vehicles.

City centre residents may not have been hit by the floods, nonetheless The Skeff holds its rural patrons dearly, and is holding a fundraising event for those in the flood affected areas. Manager Andrew Phillips explains: “Many of our loyal customers are from towns and villages across Galway county. We really wanted to offer our support and let the people of Galway county know that their Skeff staff have not forgotten them.”
Tomorrow the fundraising event, ‘Walking On Water’, will see each member of staff buy his/her own pedometers with the aim of walking a quarter of a million steps over the course of the day in order to raise money for the flood victims.

A man who, along with an armed gang, barged his way into a house and threatened its occupants with a machete has been sentenced to eight years in prison with the final three years suspended.
The Galway Circuit Criminal Court heard yesterday how the terrifying incident had come about as a result of a “turf war” over drug dealing in the area and that Thomas Sweeney had wanted to frighten a man whom he believed responsible for selling drugs to his sister. The 28-year-old with an address at 214 Castlepark, Ballybane, entered a guilty plea to the charge of aggravated burglary while in possession of a machete on January 9, 2009, at a house in Fana Glas, Ballybane.

Ok, ok, they’re coming out of the trees as often as Padraig Harrington on the back nine of a major, but things could be worse. You could be living in Ireland. What are ya telling me, that it’s terrible to be cooped up in a doghouse in one of your many houses with your mother-in-law giving ya grief and your wife down the road waiting for an explanation or two (or eight) and your favourite car wrapped around a tree and your reputation in shreds, and every girl you’ve looked at since you were 12 selling her sceál to the tabloids, but hey, Tiger, or can I call ya Tigger (I’ve a Winnie the Pooh fetish thing, ya know) it could be worse. A proposal by the NUI, Galway Students’ Union to erect a marquee in Dangan in which to host the 2010 Rag Week celebrations has been rejected by the university authorities.
It is understood that the SU proposed erecting a 5,000 capacity marquee on the university grounds in Dangan in order to confine Rag Week to just one location.

A five month prison sentence was imposed on a man who, while seeking treatment at A&E, snatched a purse belonging to a staff member and made his getaway in a hackney cab which was intercepted by gardai.
Colm Maughan (35) with an address at Flat 2, 3 St Anthony’s Road, Dublin 8, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday where he pleaded guilty to stealing cash, to the value of €360, at the A&E department of UHG on December 5, 2009.
