The Aran Islands (Inis Meain, Inis Mor, Inis Oirr ) now have access to much-needed broadband connectivity under the National Broadband Scheme (NBS ) thanks to 3, Ireland’s market leader in mobile broadband. The technology will provide homes across the islands access to the internet, and will support local businesses.
The technology will allow islanders access to high-speed and high-capacity wireless broadband, with enhanced voice, data, and multimedia services. This will allow islanders to download music, surf the web, check emails, book flights, renew car tax, or make free Skype calls abroad.
Minister O Cuív, and Damien Gallagher, NBS project director of 3, took part in the official switch-on, along with members of the local community, Development Co-Op, and school children from Kilronan national school. The National Broadband Scheme bus was also present on the day providing people with the chance to learn about the fantastic benefits of broadband.
Local businesses in the NBS coverage areas across the three islands will be able to make the most of high speed internet, email, and additional services, opening up local and global markets, and potentially improving efficiencies and revenues.
Minister Ó Cuív said ”Improving access for the island communities has always been my priority and over the years, my Department has been to the fore in progressing the physical and social development that is so necessary for the islands’ future. The extension of the NBS to the Aran Islands today is a huge step forward that will bring enhanced economic and social benefits to these communities and is further evidence of this Government’s commitment to integrated and sustainable development.”
Homes and businesses across the three islands can now avail of 3’s broadband offering which provides a minimum download speed at launch of 1.2Mbps. The product offering by 3 through the National Broadband Scheme costs €19.99 per month for 15GB, with a once off connection fee of €49.
