Astronomy club to hold ‘Dynamic Sun’ talk

If you want to see the sun like never before then do not miss a talk entitled “Our Dynamic Sun and Its Earth Connections in 3D” which will be held at the Westwood House Hotel next Monday evening at 8pm.
Organised by the Galway Astronomy Club the talk will be presented by ex-Nasa scientist Dr Peter Gallagher from Trinity College.

With all the recent trade union conferences taking place in Galway, plus Labour’s annual congress, you could be forgiven for thinking our city is a socialist Mecca. However, can you remember when the last May Day demonstration happened here?
Insider can’t remember either. In other towns, the May Day march is organised by the local trades’ council. Alas, the Galway variety is a rather sad outfit. Controlled by a cabal of full-time union officials and Labourites – its celebration of the international workers’ day usually consists of a hastily organised public meeting. But this year of all years – with workers under attack like never before – it is doing nothing!

John Killeen and company of Let's do it Galway set a benchmark in hosting global sporting events in the city. In less than two weeks, another sporting event - albeit a European one - will be held in the city. Connacht Rugby may be the fourth and poorest province in Ireland, but the occasion of hosting a European semi-final is one of which the city, county, and province should be proud.
It is a rare enough occasion when a European sporting event comes to the city. And given that the IRFU's preference was to stage this match in Dublin, the people at Connacht Rugby naturally enough want to see more community involvement to create an atmosphere that befits the city's image.

The price of petrol and diesel at the pumps has reached record levels this week with prices quoted up to €1.35 a litre for petrol and €1.25 a litre for diesel.
Fine Gael Galway East TD Paul Connaughton said motorists, farmers, and lorry owners were encountering hefty price hikes, with marked diesel prices selling at 75c a litre compared to just over 50c a few months ago.

A proposed new bridge from the Cathedral car park to Bowling Green would “destroy” salmon angling in Galway city as it is to be located at the spot “where 90 per cent of fishing takes place”.
This is the view of the Galway City Salmon Angling Association which has written to all 15 city councillors, calling on them to oppose the new footbridge.
