I’ve a great auld grá for Tuam. It was there I cut my teeth in the manic world of wordmaking. A proud town, with great characters and great music and great poetry, it was forever getting a lash. If there was a lash to be had, Tuam would be first in line. It lost its sugar factory, its railway. Major industry was never comfortable there; its historic football stadium was allowed to rot while a shiny new one was built in an awkward location in the city, and politically, it was always an afterthought rather than a focal point.

In a statement yesterday, the HSE confirmed that the hospital’s management team had no alternative but to close St Michael’s ward due to “cost containment and the non-replacement of staff”.

Fine for city man who refused to give name after high speed chase in Mayo

A Galwayman who was a passenger in a car which was involved in a high speed chase by Gardai in which a number of suspicious items was found, along with a bag containing cutting equipment, was fined €250 in Ballyhaunis District Court this week after pleading guilty to not giving gardai his name.

Kenneth Bohan , 5 St Judes Apartments, Ballybrit, Galway was a passenger in a car which was passed by Garda David Donnelly who was on patrol with a colleague in a squad car on December 19 2008 on Knock Road, Ballyhaunis at 12.45am.
