The first Galway Community Picnic will take place this Saturday at 2pm to coincide with the visit of the IMF, EU and ECB to Ireland. The picnic is open to all and will have an inclusive and family friendly atmosphere with activities and entertainment for adults and children.

Tomorrow evening heralds the official countdown to the return of one of the greatest success stories in Galway’s history as a 365-day countdown clock is activated in the city. Next year, the Volvo Ocean Race will visit the city for the second time, with the final leg of the event scheduled to enter Galway Bay on July 3.

New research initiated by teams at NUI Galway and the University of Helsinki has revealed that the true rate of global warming caused by greenhouse gases has been masked by the cooling effects of tiny airborne particles. According to the research these atmospheric aerosols — also known as particulate matter — form reflective haze and cloud layers which lead to an aerosol cooling effect. However new technologies and stricter environmental controls will see that effect reduced in the years ahead.

A new televison series is to highlight bullying among young people, and is seeking those who have experience of bullying in an attempt to help them share and relinquish their anxieties. The three part series is due to be broadcast in March 2012 and renowned clinical psychologist David Coleman wants to offer his expertise and therapeutic support to a number of young people who have been affected by bullying, either as a victim or as a bully.
