A 23-year-old man accused of raping a young British woman following a hen celebration in the city during the June Bank Holiday weekend has been further remanded to face possible further charges.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Galway District Court on Monday charged with alleged rape of the woman at a house in the city in the early hours of June 5 2011.
He is also further charged with the separate offence of assault causing harm at College Road on January 18, 2010.
Regarding the assault charge defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that the DPP had given directions for the matter to be dealt with summarily in the district court and made an application for her client to be remanded on continuing bail in relation to this charge. She further explained that in relation to the rape charge the man had previously been denied bail and is currently being held in custody.
In relation to the assault charge Judge Mary Fahy remanded the accused man on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on July 11 for attitude.
Inspector Ernie White then told Judge Fahy that gardai are completing a “major file” on the rape charge and that there is the possibility of further charges.
