Currach launch symbolises revival on Bofin

Almost the entire population of Inisbofin, along with many visitors, gathered at the island’s Old Pier on Monday to witness an historic moment as an old-style currach was launched from the slipway for the first time in decades.

The newly built currach represents a revival in Inisbofin’s long tradition of boat making, which it is hoped will see a return of regattas to the island.

Woman gets two years for fatal hit and run

A bachelor farmer, left with “horrific” injuries after being hit by a jeep driven by a drunk driver, had been lying in a field for up to six hours before he was discovered, the Galway Circuit Criminal Court was told this week.

Patrick Lynch (65) had been walking along the roadway to his home at Caherlea, Corandulla, after a few pints in his local pub when he was struck by the Hyundai Santa Fe jeep driven by Marie Melia on August 3, 2008. Melia (40) who pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous driving causing death earlier this year, appeared in court on Monday and was sentenced to two years in prison and disqualified from driving for 12 years.

Ring Girls throws Galway light on boxing’s forgotten women

Produced by Renmore native Niall Fallon and featuring Joanna Fitzpatrick from Forster Court, as well as vox pops from the Galway public, Ring Girls takes a look at the women who parade around the boxing ring notifying the crowd of the next round. As intrinsic and iconic part of the boxing spectacle as ropes and canvas, this documentary promises to give an interesting insight into an often forgotten aspect of the sport.

Sell-out performances and standing ovations close successful Galway Arts Festival

Standing ovations for Cillian Murphy in Misterman and Propeller’s Shakespearean productions, and numerous sold-out shows mark this year’s Galway Arts Festival as among the most successful in the event’s 34 year history.

According to Galway Arts Festival artistic director Paul Fahy, audience figures increased by more than 30 per cent on last year.

Deadline looms for rural broadband scheme

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte has called on people living in rural areas who are unable to avail of broadband to register for the Rural Broadband Scheme before tomorrow’s deadline.

The scheme, which aims to provide a service to the remaining homes unable to avail of existing broadband services, has received 2,000 applications to date. The Department of Communications is accepting applications from householders who live outside the areas covered by the National Broadband Scheme, and who are unable to obtain a broadband service from suppliers in their area. Applicants must be willing to allow their details to be passed to licensed internet service providers to assess whether a service can be offered to them.

Joyce’s supermarket wins national retailing award

Retailers across the country were recognised for their outstanding contribution to fresh food at Checkout Magazine’s “Best in Fresh” awards last Tuesday, and there was cause for celebration for one Galway store. The event saw hundreds of stores across Ireland audited by independent judges and Joyce’s Supermarket in Knocknacarra was awarded the title of Best Non–Affiliated Retailer in Ireland. According to the judging panel, Joyce’s offer the best fresh food offering, with a large selection of the freshest food sourced from many local suppliers. The fresh food team were commended for their passion and knowledge of the food.

Tuam native nearing completion of 1,330km fundraising walk

This Sunday a Tuam man will arrive home to his native town after undertaking a gruelling challenge to raise funds for Pieta House. Setting out almost three months ago with no accommodation booked, Colm Farrell has walked the 26 counties of Ireland. Armed with just a rucksack, map and iPod on his departure on May 7, Farrell has relied on the generosity of the public to put him up for the night over the course of his 1,330km journey.
