Deadline looms for rural broadband scheme

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte has called on people living in rural areas who are unable to avail of broadband to register for the Rural Broadband Scheme before tomorrow’s deadline.

The scheme, which aims to provide a service to the remaining homes unable to avail of existing broadband services, has received 2,000 applications to date. The Department of Communications is accepting applications from householders who live outside the areas covered by the National Broadband Scheme, and who are unable to obtain a broadband service from suppliers in their area. Applicants must be willing to allow their details to be passed to licensed internet service providers to assess whether a service can be offered to them.

“To date we have over 2,000 applications nationally under the scheme, and my Department will be accepting further applications until July 29, when the application phase of the scheme will close,” Minister Rabbitte said this week. “I would encourage people in the areas covered by the scheme to apply under the scheme if they cannot obtain a broadband service.”

Full details of the scheme are available on the Department of Communications website, www.dcenr.ie Applicants can also contact the West Regional Authority on (091 ) 563842 for assistance in registering under the scheme.
