Trail World Championships to see Connemara run broadcast to 100 million homes worldwide

Several television networks are to broadcast the recent Trail World Championships organised by Run Connemara in a development which has been hailed as a major boost for the event.

The event, which took place in July, is scheduled to be broadcast to more than 100 million homes on close to 20 international networks including TG4, Channel 4, Eurosport, Premier Sports, British Eurosport, Eastern European network Kabel Teve, online channel Dream Team Television, South Africa’s Super Sports, Band Sports in Brazil, TEN Sports throughout Asia, and Setanta networks in Ireland, the UK, Canada, Asia, and Africa.

Two Galway farmers’ markets take on industry good practice standard

Two Galway farmers’ markets have been awarded the Farmers’ Market Good Practice Standard for 2011 to 2013. The markets, in Moycullen and Roundstone, were among seven around the country which received the standard from Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney this week.

Farmers’ markets displaying the Good Practice Standard undertake to hold markets regularly, to stock a substantial proportion, ideally 50 per cent, of local produce from the county or neighbouring counties, to accommodate seasonal and local garden/allotment produce, and to promote compliance with food safety and labelling rules.

Dipping into the French/ffrench family archives recently, I came across the will of Henry French of Drumharsna, a ruined castle about halfway between Kiltartan and Ballindereeen, on the way to Gort. His father, also Patrick, inherited the Drumharsna estate from his father, whose main estate was nearby Cloghballymore (now a nursing home).

The wife of Patrick French of Drumharsna was Catherine, one of the five daughters of Henry O'Brien, son of the wealthy and powerful Sir Donough O'Brien of Dromoland Castle, Co Clare. The O'Briens were one of the oldest and most important native Irish families in both the county and the country.

Discover the fashions of the past at Portumna Castle

Portumna Castle and gardens will host an event on medieval fashions this Sunday as part of Heritage Week.

Experts from the Hunt Museum in Limerick will be in the castle on Sunday to present an interactive workshop on historical costumes, with costumes from medieval times to the roaring twenties on display. The experts will also explain the historical background of each garment, fashion faux pas, and some grizzly stories for younger audience members. Audience participation will be encouraged with the opportunity to dress up as Elizabethan nobility or Victorian elites. The workshop begins at 3pm sharp, be early to get a good seat.
