Some 1,000 people signed a petition to save a city public nursing home from closure in a two and a half hour period on Saturday at Shop Street.
The Save St Francis Home campaign, led by city councillor Catherine Connolly, has collected 21,200 signatures so far calling on the HSE West and the Minister for Health not to close the 33-year-old facility in Upper Newcastle. The campaign began in July on Shop Street and expanded to outside the city’s churches, shopping centres and housing estates and has been gaining momentum since.

A 21-year-old woman who, following the arrest of her friend, banged aggressively on the patrol van, violently kicked out, and spat at a garda, narrowly avoided a custodial sentence, instead receiving a four month suspended sentence.
Sarah O’Connor (21) with an address at 49 Knocknacarra Park, appeared before Galway District Court on Monday charged with being intoxicated in a public place, threatening and abusive behaviour, and obstruction at Galway Garda Station on May 27, 2011. O’Connor was also charged with being intoxicated in a public place and threatening and abusive behaviour at McDonald’s, Shop Street, on September 11, 2011.

Volunteers are a huge asset to the community and it is important that their efforts are recognised and celebrated, said Galway County Mayor Cllr Michael Maher when speaking at the first County Mayor’s Awards ceremony which was held at the Connemara Coast Hotel recently.
More than 250 people from community and voluntary groups from all around the county attended the event on Thursday, November 10, with Oranmore native Margaret McNulty picking up the coveted Volunteer of the Year 2011 award, a category which had a total of 38 nominations.
