More and more Galway is being associated with traffic gridlock — and it is a monicker with which we would not like to be stuck. Even a recent edition of The Apprentice saw the contestants come a cropper when they were delayed due to the infamous Galway traffic, and, increasingly so, traffic woes are becoming commonplace for the people who use this city.

Mayor launches forum to promote engagement on Galway transport

The programme, named ‘Galway Transport – Engage for a liveable city’, is seeking ideas and suggestions on how to improve Galway’s overburdened traffic systems.

Students up the ante with occupation of TD and Department offices

There were dramatic scenes at the constituency office of a Galway West TD yesterday afternoon after a number of Free Education for Everyone (FEE) members occupied the building to protest against student fee hikes, however tensions escalated during an hour-long stand-off involving gardai and the fire brigade, resulting in nine arrests.

Galwayman goes on trial facing almost three hundred rape and neglect charges

A 50-year-old Galwayman went on trial in Castlebar this week on 271 charges of raping and assaulting or neglecting his four daughters over an 18-year-period.

The charges cover an 18-year period between 1991 and 2009. It took 90 minutes for the court registrar to put each of the alleged offences to the accused man.

Last Thursday the Salthill Hotel was a taste for the senses as McCambridge’s on Shop Street celebrated its eighth annual Food and Wine Fair. Proceeds raised on the evening all went to a local charity and national schools. The function room was a myriad of tasty treats, heart warming snacks, award winning artisan produce, sweet delicacies and rich wines from some 40 award winning food and wine producers, many of whome are from the immediate Galway area.

Galway could benefit greatly if increased efforts were made to engage with China, according to Fine Gael Senator for Galway West Fidelma Healy Eames who this week called on Ireland to act as a launch pad for Chinese businesses in Europe.

Speaking from Brussels on Tuesday where she is the only Irish parliamentarian at the EU-China summit, Senator Healy Eames said: “We need to prioritise attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from China into Ireland in order to attract investment here and create jobs. You only have to look at how Ireland has worked so well as a European base for international businesses to see how we could benefit Chinese companies. We have a highly educated young population and are the only English speaking country in the Eurozone. This should be our calling card and should define how we identify Ireland to the Chinese business audience.

Expenses due to HSE workers should be paid immediately and Government party TDs, councillors, and senators must come out publicly and demand action on the issue.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil councillor Michael J Crowe who said the announcement by the HSE that up to €15 million in expenses are going to be pushed into 2012 is “completely unacceptable and must be reversed”.

Launch of ‘Empowering Traveller Women Entrepreneurs’ project

The ‘Empowering Traveller Women Entrepreneurs’ (ETWE) project is to be officially launched next Monday, December 5, at the Ballybane Enterprise Centre where the Galway Traveller Movement will host an event for women to share their experiences about how they are overcoming barriers in business.

The ETWE programme is funded under the Equality for Women Measure and is supported by the European Social Fund (ESF) under the Human Capital Investment Operational Programme and the Department of Justice and Equality. Having received funding until the end of April next year the ETWE project’s goal is to support Traveller women who are interested in business.

When I interviewed Dr. David Finn of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at NUI, Galway, I alluded at first to a statement I found in one of his recently published papers: “The study of stress-induced analgesia has enhanced our understanding of the fundamental physiology of pain and stress and can be a useful approach for uncovering new therapeutic targets for the treatment of pain and stress-related disorders.”
