Education Minister confirms full reopening of schools this autumn

Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, confirmed this week that plans are in place to support the full reopening of schools in time for the start of the new school year at the end of August/start of September 2021.

The Department of Education stated: "As has been the case throughout the pandemic, the reopening will be carried out in close consultation with Public Health and the education partners.

The Springboard+ 2021 programme will offer 10,158 free and subsidised places on 294 courses this year. Some 1,100 places on one and two year ICT graduate conversion courses are also on offer under the initiative.

Details of this year's initiative were announced this week by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, and Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, Niall Collins.

Louise Toal is a Masters in Sports Journalism student from Sligo, who is also the first woman to study an MA in Sports Journalism with NUIG. She found that there were perks and drawbacks to studying for a Masters online.

GMIT’s Department of Nursing, Health Sciences, and Social Care has added a new course in its suite of early childhood education and care programmes, the new diploma in school age childcare (Level 7), the first such course to be offered in Irish third-level colleges.

The innovative academic programme was designed in consultation with stakeholders in the school age childcare (SAC) and early learning and care (ELC) sector. One hundred and five participants took part in the consultation process representing 89 SAC and ELC organisations.

By registering on any of its QQI Level 5 sports courses, students obtain an award in sport, recreation, and exercise and have the opportunity to qualify as a fitness instructor and sports coach. GCC is accredited with the NCEF in University of Limerick and ITEC and provides a wide range of additional qualifications from NGBs such as GAA, Basketball Ireland, and FAI.
