Moylette goes for national title tonight
St Anne’s boxer Ray Moylette will be looking to bring the National Elite championship home with him this evening when he steps into the squared circle in the National Stadium. Moylette will face off against the defending champion Dean Walsh from the St Joseph’s/St Ibar’s club in the light-welterweight final. Moylette overcame the challenge of his old foe Ross Hickey in last Friday night’s semi-final in impressive style.
Moylette in semi-final action at Elite Championships
Former World Youth and European senior champion Ray Moylette from St Anne’s Boxing Club in Westport is in action in the semi-finals of the Irish Elite Championships this evening (Friday, January 16).
Moylette makes his way back
St Anne’s Ray Moylette will compete in the semi-finals of the National Elite Championships in the National Stadium in Dublin this evening. The former European and World junior champion saw off the challenge of Sean Montgomery (Canal BC) last Sunday in the same venue. The Islandeady boxer will be up against Portlaoise’s Michael Nevin who won two bouts last weekend to get to this stage of the competition. If Moylette picks up the win he’ll face the inner of Dean Walsh (St Joseph’s/St Ibars) and Rohan Date (St Paul’s).
Events coming thick and fast across the county
There were three boxing tournaments held in Mayo last week in Ardnaree, Achill, and Castlebar and this weekend they keep coming with tournaments hosted by Ardagh Boxing Club in Hiney’s tonight Friday, January 17. That will be followed by a Geesala Boxing Club tournament in the High Chaparral on Saturday night and a Charlestown Boxing Club tournament in CBD Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The days of the count back may be over in boxing following the introduction of the 10 point must scoring system, but some of the bouts are equally tight, as was proven in the 2013 National Junior Cadet Championships last weekend.
Females shine at National championships
An extremely large entry into the 2012/2013 National u18 championships last weekend saw the first session of boxing on Friday last take the full seven hour shift to complete. Seventeen Mayo boxers, a combination of both male and female, weighed in on Friday morning. Two female boxers added a pair of additional titles to the 32 already won by Mayo boxers this season. Lycia Heneghan (Ballinrobe BC) and Kathy Higgins (Ardnaree BC) were successful in their attempts to include national titles on their records.

The Magnificent 14 bring home national titles to Mayo
The national female championships for 11-year-old to 16-year-old boxers were held in the National Stadium last Friday and Saturday with a fantastic total 24 Mayo boxers weighing in for the championships. On Friday evening it was the girl one and girl two boxers that stepped into the ring and Mayo girls won seven out of the ten contests they were involved in.
Two dozen Mayo girls in national finals
A squad of 24 female boxers from 10 clubs in Mayo will attempt to add additional titles to the 18 national titles won by various boxers from the county so far this season. The action will commence this evening (Friday) continuing tomorrow in the National Stadium in Dublin. Geesala BC will have the biggest contingent with six boxers in the finals. Golden Gloves and St Anne’s each has four boxers in the finals, with Castlebar sending forward three, Ballinrobe two, and one each from Ardagh/Crossmolina, Swinford, Ballyhaunis, Ballina, and Knockmore.
Large number of Mayo boxers take part in cadet championships
Eight clubs in Mayo entered 17 boxers into the National Senior Cadet championships for 14-year-old and 15-year-old boxers. The competition was held in the National Stadium over three days last weekend. The IABA will be using these championships as part of their selection process for the European Junior Championships in Russia this summer.
