A squad of 24 female boxers from 10 clubs in Mayo will attempt to add additional titles to the 18 national titles won by various boxers from the county so far this season. The action will commence this evening (Friday ) continuing tomorrow in the National Stadium in Dublin. Geesala BC will have the biggest contingent with six boxers in the finals. Golden Gloves and St Anne’s each has four boxers in the finals, with Castlebar sending forward three, Ballinrobe two, and one each from Ardagh/Crossmolina, Swinford, Ballyhaunis, Ballina, and Knockmore.
In the girls’ 11 year division, seven boxers will be competing for the first time in the National Stadium. Megan Sweeney (St Anne’s ), Niamh O’Neill (Ballyhaunis ), Laura Padden (Golden Gloves ), Aoibha Ginty (Geesala ), Aoibha Carrabine (Geesala ), Belinda Stevens (Ballina ), Ethel Leonard (Ardagh/Crossmolina ). In the girl two class four Mayo boxers will go to the bell, they are Kayleigh Lynch and Joanne Padden (both Golden Gloves ), Ellen McDonagh (St Anne’s ), and Ann-Lisa Sweeney (Knockmore ). The girl three division will have Danielle Ginnelly and Rosie Conway (Geesala BC ) and Catherine Walsh (St Anne’s ) all competing for glory. In the girl four division Shannon Sweeney (St Anne’s ) BC has already obtained the 44kg weight division title, while the highly experienced four time national champion Ashling Joyce (Ballinrobe BC ) will attempt to add an additional title to her impressive collection.
Seven Mayo boxers will be participating in the girl five grade. Castlebar BC has two boxers in this section, Grainne Gavin and Claire Mc Donagh, of this duo Gavin has two previous titles behind her. Jamie Butler (Ballinrobe ) BC, last season’s girl four 48kg champion, will be in action in the girl five this weekend. Five time national champion Jacqui Lynch (Golden Gloves ) will be attempting to add title number six to her inspiring array of titles. As will be Ciara Ginty and Shannon Timlin (both Geesala ), while Ciara Sheedy (Swinford ) will be seeking to win her first title. Mayo has one sole boxer in the girl six category, Sarah Dawson (Castlebar ) last season’s girl five 54kg champion will be in the ring on Saturday evening.
