There were three boxing tournaments held in Mayo last week in Ardnaree, Achill, and Castlebar and this weekend they keep coming with tournaments hosted by Ardagh Boxing Club in Hiney’s tonight Friday, January 17. That will be followed by a Geesala Boxing Club tournament in the High Chaparral on Saturday night and a Charlestown Boxing Club tournament in CBD Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
In Ardnaree the Benny Walkin Memorial tournament last weekend saw wins for Shane Moran, Fionn Gill, Stephen Collins, Dara Padden, Robert Barrett, Stephen Maughan, and Seamus Doherty across the various weight divisions in the boy one section. In the boy two section James McStravick and Ben Conway picked up wins, while Niamh O’Neill was the winner in the girl two competition. Cathal Myers won the boy 3 46kg bout, and in the boy four grade there were wins for Mark Reynolds and Eric Nash.
In the Achill event Ella Donoghue won the girl one 42kg bout, and Caolan Hopkins was the boy one 66kg winner. In the girl three grade Joanne Padden was the 49kg winner. Owen McDonagh, Adam Dempsey and Aidan Gaughan all picked up wins in the boy three section, while Matthew Whorriskey and Patrick Brady were boy four winners, with Shannon Sweeney winning in the girl four section.
In the youth one grade Ruaidhri O’Connor picked up a win as did Jamie Butler in the girl six level. The youth two competition saw wins for Nevan Fannon and Harry Molloy, while Simon Stokes was the winner in the u18 level.
Last Sunday’s tournament in the Breaffy GAA Club House saw 13 bouts take place with Jake O’Shaughnessy and Anthony Walsh winning in boy two. Thomas Sweeney was the boy four winner and Kristen Cresham the girl one winner. In youth one Renee Roache and Sean Monk picked up wins, while in youth two Dean Loftus, Aaron Daly, Brighton Masku, Aisling Joyce, and Eamon Kelly all had their hands raised in victory. In an u18 75kg contest Dylan Ruane defeated Rickie O’Donnell and in a u22 64kg contest Damien Joyce saw off Ben Garrett.
Castlebar BC would like to wish Grainne Gavin the best of luck in her semi-final at the National Open Youths Championship in the National Stadium this Saturday against Loran Hogan of Edenderry, and to commiserate with Stephen Chambers who was narrowly defeated in the Quarter finals of the National Open Youths Championships.
