Moylette makes his way back

St Anne’s Ray Moylette will compete in the semi-finals of the National Elite Championships in the National Stadium in Dublin this evening. The former European and World junior champion saw off the challenge of Sean Montgomery (Canal BC ) last Sunday in the same venue. The Islandeady boxer will be up against Portlaoise’s Michael Nevin who won two bouts last weekend to get to this stage of the competition. If Moylette picks up the win he’ll face the inner of Dean Walsh (St Joseph’s/St Ibars ) and Rohan Date (St Paul’s ).

Moylette’s St Anne’s team-mate Danny Coughlan came up short against Keith Flavin (Paulstown BC ) in the 60kg grade in their last eight contest. The finals of the Elite Championships will be held over the weekend of Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8.

Mayo finals showcase some serious talent

The semi-finals and finals of the 2014 Mayo championship were staged in the Killala Community Centre last weekend. There were 19 semi-finals and 52 finals contested over two days in the north Mayo venue. The winners of the Boy 1, 2 and 3 now go on to the preliminary round or quarter-finals of the Connacht championships which will be held over two days in the Peter Callaghan Centre in Westport on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23. The semi-finals and finals will be held in the Oughterard Community Centre the following weekend.

Last weekend for the first time in the Mayo championship all boxers that had qualified for the finals were compelled to weigh in on the morning of their contest. This new regulation was introduced this year by the county board on a trial basis to prevent boxers that had qualified for the final add on extra weight from their weight division from the previous weekend thus giving them an advantage over their opponent.
