Four schools in Mayo are being represented by some of their brightest students at the RDS in Dublin for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, which opened today (Thursday).
Mayo students in bid to become Ireland’s Top Young Problem Solvers at DCU
Two Mayo students, Sofia Ferdini and Ruth O’Connor of Mount St Michael, have taken part in the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad finals, the search to find Ireland’s top young decoders at Dublin City University. The best performers at the national finals in DCU will be selected to represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad in Manchester in July 2013.
Two Mayo students are finalists in national writing competition
Siobhan Halligan (second year, Mount St Michael Secondary School, Claremorris) and Catherine King (second year, Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Crossmolina) are both finalists in the 2013 John West Fantasy Writing Competition – and they are competing against each other in the same category. It is an impressive achievement for both girls as the competition attracted more than 11,000 entries this year.
Mayo transition years praised for their Gathering short films
Students from Mount St Michael, St Gerald’s College, and Gaelcholaiste Chomain took part in the north west regional final of The Gathering Ireland short film competition for transition year students, supported by Bank of Ireland.

Good luck to Claremorris Red Cross novice first aid team. They have recently come through the regional final, and are now going on to represent Mayo in the national First Aid challenge.
Still Life in Green and Red
There will be a free concert at Ballintubber Abbey on Sunday October 16 at 8pm. Ian Wilson’s Still Life in Green and Red is performed by the ConTempo Quartet and inspired by the people of Mayo.
