Questions and answers session for Fianna Fáil in Mayo

The Dermot Flanagan nomination debacle that upset the Fianna Fáil party in Mayo this week was due to be thrashed out at a Mayo Dáil Ceantair meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar last night (Thursday). Mr Flanagan himself was due to appear at the meeting and personally explain how it was he had canvassed for four days in the county to garner support as a potential candidate for the party, following which he announced on Friday January 14 that he intended to seek a nomination, before suddenly withdrawing entirely from the campaign 48 hours later.

The latest figures released by Fáilte Ireland on visitor numbers in 2010 which show an overall decline of 15 per cent on the 2009 figure to levels last seen in 1998, are extremely disappointing as Government inaction has let this downward trend continue.

The recent VHI hike of 45 per cent in charges must be reversed, the Fine Gael spokesperson on Social Protection, Deputy Michael Ring, has demanded.
“In light of the fact that the guidelines for medical cards have remained the same for the past few years and with the vast increases in VHI premiums, many people will now have no health cover,” Deputy Ring said.

New Year, New you, so the saying goes - and for the people of Mayo, 2011 will certainly prove to be a testing year. Starting right now, the campaign to elect a new government raises a divisive issue in the county as much of the potential for electing the next taoiseach of the country — in the form of hotly tipped Enda Kenny — rests in our hands. Therefore, the support of local constituents for their Fine Gael front man is all the more vital between now and March, when the next general election is scheduled to take place. It is only through a strong showing here that the rest of the country can be expected to take its cue.

Despite being placed by bookmakers Paddy Powers as the fourth favourite to become the next leader of Fianna Fáil at odds of 8/1, Ballina based Minister of State Dara Calleary has not given that idea a moment’s thought, he told the Mayo Advertiser this week.

A meeting of the officer board of Castlebar Fianna Fail Comhairle Ceantar was held on Wednesday to finalise end of year matters and to hold preliminary discussions on the forthcoming general election. John Hamrock, chairman, presided at the meeting.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has confirmed that serious political reform will still be an important part of Fine Gael's policy for the upcoming general election. A number of months ago, Fine Gael launched its political reform document 'New Politics' containing a number of proposals such as holding a referendum on abolishing Seanad Éireann. Other features included a reduction in the numbers of TDs, making Government more open and transparent, and providing initiatives to empower citizens.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny launched a new website this week aimed at inviting the public to make their views known on the future of Ireland. It has replaced the normal Fine Gael website on a temporary basis in advance of the General Election to maximise the opportunity for individuals to share their views with Fine Gael. According to the party: “This is a vital part of Fine Gael's intentions to use all means of communicating with the public; these include traditional media as well as a new and enhanced digital strategy.”

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has welcomed the success of the recent public meeting on the Lisbon Treaty held in the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar. The meeting was hosted by Jim Higgins MEP with Dep George Lee as the guest speaker. The attendance at the meeting was very encouraging as the room was full to capacity and showing the interest in the event.
“The meeting was almost three hours long and proved to be very informative to those who attended,” Deputy Kenny said. “The questions and answers session proved very successful in what was George Lee’s first visit to Castlebar since being elected to the Dáil and he proved to be hugely popular at the meeting.”

“Lisbon will worsen the economic crisis both in Ireland and throughout Europe” according to Sinn Fein Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh. “The threat to our economy is not in a rejection of Lisbon. It is in the ongoing privatisation policies of the government and the failure to properly invest in education, health, childcare, research and development and broadband.” Rectifying these failures will be all the more difficult if the Lisbon Treaty is ratified, the councillor claims.
