Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has confirmed that serious political reform will still be an important part of Fine Gael's policy for the upcoming general election. A number of months ago, Fine Gael launched its political reform document 'New Politics' containing a number of proposals such as holding a referendum on abolishing Seanad Éireann. Other features included a reduction in the numbers of TDs, making Government more open and transparent, and providing initiatives to empower citizens.
“There has been much recent attention played to the proposals of other parties and their approach to political reform,” Deputy Kenny said. “I wish to remind the public that Fine Gael already have their policy document in place since March 2010. As far back as October 2009, I have publicly stated that Fine Gael will allow the people of Ireland to determine the future of Seanad Éireann through a referendum. We have substantial plans on the issue of political reform and improving Ireland's political system; those plans have not changed and they will not change.”
