Fine Gael TD Michael Ring has called on An Post and the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív TD to save the postal service on Inisbiggle. “An Post are getting rid of the rural post office by stealth, they are not paying people to make it a viable service. Ring calls on Fine Gael to step back from Lisbon unless there are changes

Fri, Aug 01, 2008

“The people have spoken,” is Michael Ring’s view on the current discussions about what to do next in relation to the Lisbon Treaty. The Westport-based Fine Gael TD, who is one of the most popular public representatives in the county, is urging his party to distance themselves from the treaty if it is put before the people again. “The people have spoken on the treaty, and if it is put in front of them again without any changes I think we have to step away from it. Councillor calls for better school funding

Fri, Aug 01, 2008

Fine Gael Councillor John O’Malley condemned the Department of Education for their inadequate provision of funding for school projects, stressing that “principals and boards of management are chasing councillors for their Notice of Motion money” in order to complete school works which are not provided for in Department funding.

The Westport councillor, who made these comments at the recent electoral area committee meeting, said that he does not want to criticise those seeking the money to complete school facilities, but as the Department is failing to provide substantial funding to complete school projects this has led to Notice of Motion money being spent on “three to four schools in Mayo this year”.
