The reflection of a “tightening of the belts” attitude is evident in statistics released from the CSO this week which highlighted a decline in the number of new vehicles registered in Mayo in June 2008 in comparison to the same time last year.
This June 143 new private cars were licensed for the first time, a decrease of 135 cars on the 278 that were registered in June 2007. The statistics, however, show there has been an increase in the number of second-hand cars being registered in the county with 201 second-hand private cars being licensed in June 2008, an increase of 30 from 171 last year.
New goods vehicles also saw a decline in registration with 81 new goods vehicles licensed for the first time in Mayo in June 2008 in comparison to 111 in 2007.
Again, like the increase in the number of second-hand cars registered, there was also an increase in second-hand goods vehicles licensed— from 51 in 2007 to 55 in 2008.
Countywide Ford, Toyota and Volkswagen lead the tables as the most popular choices.
This decrease in the number of new vehicles registered in Mayo aligns with national statistics which show there has been a 52.4 per cent decrease in the number of new private cars licensed in June 2008 (7,369 compared to 15,465 last June ); new goods vehicles licensed in June decreased by 5.6 per cent and first licensing of second-hand private cars increased by 329 (6.4 per cent ) on the same month last year.
