Fine Gael propose opposition chairman for Castlebar electoral area

In what was described as embarking on a policy of “value for money” Fine Gael proposed the re-election of Fianna Fáil Councillor Al McDonnell as chairman of the Castlebar electoral area committee for another year.

In proposing Cllr McDonnell, the Fine Gael whip Cllr Paddy McGuinness, who had worked closely with Cllr McDonnell during the drafting and adoption of the controversial County Development Plan, said he was “pleased to promote Cllr McDonnell and nominate him in an election year”.

He said Fine Gael could be magnanimous.

The proposal was seconded by Fianna Fáil’s Sean Bourke who said Fine Gael recognised talent when they proposed Cllr McDonnell.

Cllr McDonnell was described as a very good, impartial and dedicated chairman by Cllr Johnny Mee who said he was happy to support his nomination. He was wished well in the coming year by Deputy Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Blackie Gavin.
