Mayo schools to receive science awards

Discover Science and Engineering has announced that 22 Mayo primary schools will receive an Award of Science Excellence this year as part of the Discover Primary Science programme. The awards programme, which is organised by Discover Science & Engineering, the Government’s national science promotion programme, acknowledges the efforts of primary school children and teachers who have demonstrated an increased knowledge of science and its many applications.

Drunk driver drove out in front of garda

A 55-year-old man who after finishing his music gig at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel pulled out in front of gardaí while intoxicated was before Belmullet District Court this week.

At 5.47am on August 29 last year, Garda Martin McHugh observed Joseph Carey, Coolaba, Geesala, pull his van out from the entrance to the Broadhaven Bay Hotel while turning right in front of the Garda car, which forced Garda McHugh to apply the patrol car’s breaks.

Tesco brings new lower prices to Mayo

Tesco Ireland this Wednesday reopened its stores in County Mayo, unveiling a radical price shift which brings reduced grocery prices to consumers in the county. The move follows the highly successful launch of the price programme in nine border towns last month.

Shell to Sea protesters in court

More than 20 protesters opposed to the Shell project in north Mayo were crammed into a packed Belmullet District Court on Wednesday to face a litany of mostly public order charges in relation to incidents spanning throughout the Belmullet area in May and June.

Many of those before Judge Denis McLoughlin were not from the jurisdiction with addresses from on the charge sheets from London, Cork, Kerry, Dublin, and Galway and were arrested following the National Day of Action on May 9, at Glengad; May 31 at Glengad; and on June 2 and 5 at Broadhaven Bay. Defendants from protest incidents in 2008 were also before the court.

Drugs Payment Scheme cards due to expire

The HSE in Mayo is running an awareness campaign this month to alert people to the fact that Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS) cards are due to expire on June 30 2009.

Currently in Mayo there are 8,500 DPS cards due to expire on June 30. The HSE is asking everyone who has a DPS card to check the expiry date on the card and, if their card is due to expire at the end of this month, make contact with the local DPS office.
