Castlebar Town Council withdraws part of McHale Park planning permission

Castlebar Town Council withdrew part of the planning permission for McHale Park at its monthly meeting last Thursday. The meeting, which was attended by a large number of the residents of McHale Road, but not by members of the Mayo County Board, saw a motion put forward by independent councillor Frank Durcan and seconded by fellow independent councillor and Mayor of the town Michael Kilcoyne passed by six votes to three in the chamber.

A man who pleaded guilty to his part in the theft of €500 worth of cable from an Eircom yard in Claremorris was convicted and fined €100 at Claremorris District Court this week.

Fine’s for man with no NCT and bald tyre

A 20-year-old man was convicted and fined for not having a NCT and having a bald tyre in Claremorris District Court this week. Michael Quigley, Garryedmond, Brickens, Claremorris, was stopped by Garda Brian Guerin at Clare, Claremorris on April 23 2009. Quigley had no NCT displayed on the car and it had not been put through the test. He also had a bald tyre with no tread on it. The court was told that Quigley had since put the car through the NCT and it had failed, but he had an appointment for a retest in October and he changed the tyre after being stopped. For having no NCT he was convicted and fined €160 and for having a bald tyre he was convicted and fined €100, while the non display of a NCT was taken into consideration.

Bord Gáis Networks and Hotel Westport win environment award

Earlier this year Bord Gáis Networks won the Sustainable and Environmentally Enhancing Product award at the Catex Exhibition, the annual showcase event for the hospitality industry. Bord Gáis Networks’ award was for its case study on the application of Combined Heat and Power at Hotel Westport.  They recently presented the award to the Management Team at Hotel Westport in recognition of the work undertaken to reduce their CO2 emissions through the selection of a more environmentally friendly technology and fuel.

“Lisbon will worsen the economic crisis both in Ireland and throughout Europe” according to Sinn Fein Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh. “The threat to our economy is not in a rejection of Lisbon. It is in the ongoing privatisation policies of the government and the failure to properly invest in education, health, childcare, research and development and broadband.” Rectifying these failures will be all the more difficult if the Lisbon Treaty is ratified, the councillor claims.

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane, responding to the Commission on Taxation proposals to tax child benefit, insists that this is grossly unfair, and would create real difficulties for families as they struggle to make ends meet. Fine Gael community, rural, and Gaeltacht affairs spokesperson Michael Ring has described the new National Drugs Strategy as “worryingly vague”, adding that the crisis in the public finances means that the strategy has to be built on clear actions that can be delivered despite budgetary constraints.
