Road sweeping rota for Castlebar

Director of Services for Mayo County Council and Castlebar town manager Seamus Granahan gave an undertaking to draw up a rota system for road sweeping between the two authorities following heavy criticism from a number of councillors in relation to the sweeping of the streets in the town.

A farmer from Ballycastle who, following a complaint from a member of the public in relation to his driving, was stopped and arrested for drink driving, was disqualified from driving for four years at Ballina District Court this week.

Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere brought a motion calling on Castlebar Town Council to enact bye-laws that govern the size and scale of headstones in the new cemetery in the town to last week’s town council meeting. “This is an issue I’ve had a lot of representations about from people in the town,” Cllr Deere told the meeting. “They are concerned about the size of headstones that are going up in the cemetery and we need to preserve the dignity of the cemetery for everybody.”

Castlebar’s Lough Lannagh holiday village could become a mini-Trabolgan, according to Councillor Frank Durcan. Cllr Durcan put forward a motion calling on the council to upgrade the holiday village. Town manager Seamus Granahan said he would explore the possibilities of doing so, and congratulated the people who are currently running the facility on doing a good job, but warned that finances would be a stumbling block at this current time.

A bar manager was convicted and fined €750 and sentenced to a three month prison sentence suspended for a year at Claremorris District Court this week. Patrick Coleman, Oughhan, Tubbercurry, Sligo, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Tom Reidy on November 15 2008, however Judge Mary Devins found that there was no doubt in her mind following the evidence that Coleman did assault Mr Reidy.

During a discussion on the development row at McHale Park at last week’s Castlebar Town Council meeting, Mayor Michael Kilcoyne told the meeting that he was disgusted that the council did not seek to get a High Court injunction following the breach of a warning notice issued by the council.
