Registration for charity event

Registration for the fourth annual Croagh Patrick challenge will take place on Saturday November 28 at 11am in SuperValu, Castlebar.

If you would like to participate in the seven day event from March 11 to March 17 2010, which raises funds for autism, register on Saturday or online on www.croaghpatrickchallenge.com

Castlebar students visit allotments

As part of National Science Week, students from St Patrick’s BNS visited John Moran’s Castlebar Town Farm and Allotments at Balloor for a hands-on field trip.

All children were given home seed packs and hopefully have gained a life skill. For more information on the allotments contact John Moran on 087 938 8488, visit www.organic-garden.ie, or tune into CRCFM on Fridays from 11.45am to 12.30pm.

Grandparents’ Mass

Grandparents in Castlebar have organised a special grandparents and families’ Mass on Sunday December 6.

“This will be the weekly 12.30pm Mass, and it will have a special emphasis on the family, with readings and prayers of the faithful by grandparents and grandchildren,” said Angela Gormley, chairperson of the Castlebar branch of the CGA. “The Offertory gifts will be brought to the altar by grandparents and grandchildren, and the Mass will be followed by Benediction.”

Our Lady’s Choir will perform at the Mass and young people are asked to bring along drawings or pictures of their grandparents which will be placed on the altar. Final plans for the Mass will be made at the next meeting of the Castlebar branch on Thursday November 26 in The Monastery at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

New Ballina store

The official opening of the new 02 Ballina store will take place this Saturday, November 21.

Minister of State Dara Calleary TD will officially open the store at 3.30pm and i102-104 will broadcast from the store. There will be some great give-aways on the day and all are invited to the event.

Learn about birds in your garden

Niall Hatch from Birdwatch Ireland will be giving a talk on the Garden Bird Survey on Wednesday November 25 at 7.30pm in GMIT, Castlebar.

If you would like to know more about the birds that visit your garden as well as what is happening in gardens throughout the country go along to the free talk.

Liam Lawton concert

Liam Lawton came to public prominence some years ago when his song ‘The Cloud's Veil’ was used as part of all memorial services of the World Trade Center disaster. Lawton will perform in Ballintubber Abbey on Sunday November 22 at 8pm.

His concert is both a musical and visual experience. An amazing lighting show complements his soft Celtic/spiritual sound beautifully and helps create a unique atmosphere. Doors open at 7pm and admission is by ticket only (€25 ) and can be obtained from Ballintubber Abbey (094 903 0934 ).

Christmas bazaar

A Christmas bazaar will take place on Saturday November 21 at 11am in St Anne’s Boxing Club, James Street Car Park, in aid of United Christian Aid, Moldova.

There will be a selection of home baked goods, new and nearly new clothes, books, DVDs, CDs, household goods, Christmas decorations, and lots more on offer. There will also be raffle prizes and a lucky dip to be won on the day. All are welcome.

Meeting in Straide

A public meeting will take place in the Davitt Community Centre, Straide, on Friday November 27 at 8.30pm in order to establish a community development organisation for the area.

Many people have already expressed the need for such a community development organisation. This is an opportunity to go and express your interests and get involved. For further information contact Eamon MacNicholas on 085 733 1698.

Karaoke competition

A karaoke competition, with over €2,000 worth of prizes to be won, will take place in the Welcome Inn Lounge every Thursday night at 10pm. Entry is free.

Quiz night in Claremorris

Claremorris swimming club will hold a quiz night in the Dalton Inn on Friday November 20 at 9pm.

Tables of four will cost €40, please support.

Santa and craft fair

Ballyhaunis people are getting into the festive spirit with their continued loyalty campaign being run in the local stores where you can win prizes when you collect enough stamps in a loyalty book. Santa will also arrive on November 29, the same day as the town’s Christmas lights will be switched on.

On the same day a craft fair will be held on Sunday November 29 in the Parochial Hall from 11am to 8pm.

Mayo Peace Park documentary

Listeners to CRC FM (102.9 FM ) are in for a real treat this month as a new three-part documentary series entitled Brothers In Arms – featuring a unique look at the background and development of the Mayo Peace Park and Garden of Remembrance in Castlebar – will be aired over three successive Saturdays commencing on November 21 at 4pm.

The series is co-produced by Ronan Courell and Tommy Marren and was recorded throughout 2008 and 2009.

Disability information day

A launch and information afternoon, relating to people with disabilities will be held by the Helping Ourselves Live with Disability Group in the Gateway Hotel, Swinford, on Thursday December 3 from 2pm to 4pm.

The brochure will be launched by John Kelly HEO from the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Speakers will provide information on education, employment, mental health, and sporting opportunities. Also available on the day will be information from other service providers. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

Crafts fair in Claremorris

A fundraising craft fair will take place on Sunday November 29 in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris from 12 noon to 5pm in aid of the Prem Rawat Foundation.

There will be 35 tables of beautiful handmade gifts by local craftspeople and from all over Mayo at prices to suit all pockets. There will also be Christmas items such as cakes, puddings, wreaths, logs, etc. There is no admission charge and a raffle will take place on the day, with prizes sponsored by local business people.

Christmas fair and fashion show

Tonight, Friday November 20, there will be a Christmas fair and fashion show in The Valk, Ballinrobe, starting at 7pm, in support of Western Care Association and Ballinrobe Christmas lights.

The night will start off with a mulled wine reception and a large number of businesses from the Ballinrobe area will display up to the minute fashion accessories, health, pampering and make up products, and unusual Christmas gifts for your loved ones.

This will be followed by a fashion show extravaganza, where seasonal fashion will be displayed by local boutiques — D Biggins, Ken Murphy’s Menswear, Outdoor Pursuits, and Sorbet, as well as shoes from Tierney’s and Vaughans’s Shoes. Hair and makeup for the fashion show will be provided by Viva Hair Design and Angel’s Health and Beauty Clinic.

Tickets (€15 ) are available from Western Care Association, Ballinrobe, (094 954 1472 ) from all participating shops, or on the door on the night.

Bingo in Foxford

A bingo night in aid of the ISPCC and Childline will take place in the Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre at 9pm tonight (Friday November 20 ). Please go along and support.
