Road sweeping rota for Castlebar

Director of Services for Mayo County Council and Castlebar town manager Seamus Granahan gave an undertaking to draw up a rota system for road sweeping between the two authorities following heavy criticism from a number of councillors in relation to the sweeping of the streets in the town.

Cllr Michael Kilcoyne told a meeting of the local electoral area: “I’m not happy that it [the town council road sweeper] is being left idle while the streets in the town are being left in an unkempt condition. The relief road is particularly bad with gullies getting blocked as falling leaves are not being swept up. I’m annoyed that no effort in particular is being made to co-ordinate efforts in the town.”

Cllr Frank Durcan agreed with Cllr Kilcoyne saying: “What’s happening at the moment is ridiculous, some streets are being swept twice a week while some aren’t being swept at all.” During the debate Patsy Burke, senior engineer for the council, said that there were plans to get the relief road “in hand”. To which Cllr Kilcoyne replied “the matter is not in hand.”
