As part of the GAA’s 125 year celebrations, Liam Mellows GAA Club ran a highly successful Lá na gClub/Family Day at their clubhouse and grounds at Ballyloughane on Sunday. Organised predominantly by the club’s women’s committee, the fun began in the early afternoon for the younger members with hurling and camogie blitzes, egg and spoon races, sack races, and face painting. An underage Poc Fada competition for both girls and boys attracted considerable interest, but it was the mums’ match that provided the best entertainment for the kids. An exciting game of two halves also took place – the first half hurling, the second half Gaelic football. The match involved players of a wide age profile, including a number of fathers and sons playing against each other, in addition to county star Aonghus Callanan. Due to the outstanding success, Liam Mellows intend organising a similar day again next year. The club, which was established in 1933, is currently developing itsclubhouse and grounds at Ballyloughane, Renmore.

Connacht conclude their home season tomorrow in the Galway Sportsground (6.30pm) when they take on Ulster in this penultimate Magners League fixture.
With Connacht rooted to the bottom of the league table, there is nothing but pride at stake. Yet they have a huge incentive if they can pick themselves up from their defeat to the Dragons last time out which ended their Heineken Cup ambitions. This is still an interprovincial and a victory tomorrow would give Connacht their first clean sweep at home over all the Irish provinces in the professional era.

United welcome Kenna’s new charges at Terryland
Thu, Apr 30, 2009
With the first series of Premier League fixtures completed, a satisfactory 12-point return ensures Galway United will be eager to build on this solid foundation when St Patrick’s Athletic enter Terryland Park tomorrow evening.
Despite the recent defeats against Shamrock Rovers and Cork City, there is sufficient evidence to suggest United can achieve their stated seasonal objective of survival. The opening nine matches featured a defensive solidity, and Galway are now correctly renowned as obdurate opponents.

The opening weekend of the Galway SHC may have been spoiled by wretched weather, but there was no disguising Sarsfields, Beagh, Tommie Larkins, Clarinbridge, Kinvara, and Killimordaly’s joy at obtaining the craved first win.
A Ger Farragher-inspired Castlegar and Ardrahan scampered away from the puddles of Kenny Park, Athenry on Sunday night reasonably satisfied, too, after drawing their fixture. At this stage of the year any defeat that is avoided is looked on favourably.
