Straw and thaw key to Munster clash going ahead

Despite the big freeze Connacht are expecting the St Stephen’s Day Magners League clash with Munster to go ahead at the Sportsground. Weather forecasts suggest a thaw on Christmas Day and the straw which helped prevent the frost setting in for Friday night’s clash with Harlequins has been put down again and for the moment at least appears to be working according to Connacht CEO Gerry Kelly.

Kavanagh faces lay-off with ankle surgery

Shane Kavanagh (right), who captained the Galway hurlers to the league title last May and throughout the championship from full-back, is expected to miss part of next season as he recovers from an ankle operation.

Kavanagh’s likely absence will be a huge blow to Galway’s league ambitions for 2011, as the Kinvara clubman was a tower of strength at full-back all season. He was considered by many pundits to have been very unfortunate not to have collected an All-Star statuette for his displays.
