GTI advance in colleges’ cup

GTI advanced to the semi-finals of the Combined Colleges Cup after overcoming a strong Carlow IT outfit at Terryland Park this week.

Despite conceding an early goal from Carlow’s Nick Cosgrave, GTI ran out 3-1 winners. Goals by recent Galway United signing and GTI captain Enda Curran, his strike partner Mark Dowling, and a second-half goal from midfielder David Cullen were enough to see them through to the next round.

Basque smash and grab for impressive Connacht

After a torrid period of narrow defeats Connacht lifted the gloom in Bayonne last Saturday evening with a surprise 35-21 victory away to the high flying Basque side. The westerners built up an early lead, withstood a strong fightback and finished with two well taken tries in the final ten minutes to take a memorable victory.

Eric Elwood’s European hopes ended in December with back to back defeat to Harlequins but Saturday’s victory will be a huge boost to his side’s confidence after a tough run of nine straight defeats in recent months.

We decided last Sunday for a change of scenery to travel out the Curragh line and cut across via Belclare to Tuam Stadium rather than the usual N17 route, for the FBD clash between NUIG and Galway.

And that decision provided the most excitement of the day for me and my two young passengers, which says something about the football, as it turned the 20-mile journey into a near rally driving experience - trying to avoid the all too numerous potholes.

Connacht enter Dragons’ den for third game in eleven days

Connacht’s New Year’s tussle with Leinster marked the first time this season that they lost by more than 12 points. Until Saturday they had not found themselves down and out late in a game at any point this season but the 22-point bonus point victory really didn’t flatter a slick Leinster. AIL returns with round of previously postponed fixtures

The All Ireland League resumes this Saturday a week earlier than planned with a full programme of postponed fixtures from December taking place. Two big games are down for decision in Galway with Galwegians and Corinthians determined to start the new year on the right foot.

For Galwegians, the focus is on avoiding the bottom of Division 1B and a relegation play off. They currently sit in last place four points adrift of UCC having won just one from five so far this season. The Cork side visit Crowley Park on Saturday in what is a crucial fixture for both clubs.
