Farrell claims a third national title

Galway athletes produced some excellent performances at the recent national junior indoor championships in Nenagh.

Pride of place went to Craughwell AC's Cathriona Farrell who competed here for the last time as a junior and won her third national indoor title in a row.

Farrell won with a jump of 1.70 - some 10cm clear of second-placed jumper Mary-Kate Lannigan of KCH. Farrell’s clubmate Maria McNamara was seventh in the same event, just 5cm from a medal. McNamara also finished seventh in the long jump, just behind clubmate Mairead McCann.

Craughwel’s Maeve Curley had a tough battle in the 3k walk, but claimed a bronze medal in 15.02 - 15 seconds from the silver position.

Galway City Harriers’ rising star Keith Fallon blazed his way to a bronze in the 1500m in 4.14.72 - just 5 seconds behind the winner and ahead of Craughwell AC's Peadar O'h-Airmhi in fourth place. Simon Callaghan of Galway City Harriers also had a great run to finish fourth in the men’s 60m hurdles in 9.29. Rachael Finnegan finished sixth in the women's 60m hurdles in 10.28., and also fourth in the triple jump.

In Sunday’s Cross Country in Tullamore, Allanah Lally of GCH had an epic battle, but had to settle for fourth place, while Maeve Brannigan finished seventh in the same race.
