Thu, Sep 27, 2012
His GAA origins may be etched in Offaly soil, but Operation Transformation winner, and Knocknacarra resident Ronan Scully has declared himself an adopted son of the Galway contingent. “I played football with Offaly where I won an All-Ireland but I’m living in Galway and I’m a huge supporter. I was at the last game and I’ll be going Sunday too. I got Galway kits for my daughters so we’re ready to go.” Scully was vocal about his faith in the Galway quest to claim temporary ownership rights of the Liam McCarthy Cup. Scully commended Anthony Cunningham for the way that he has transcended the hurling landscape in Galway. He accredited the manager with ‘galvanising’ and ‘consolidating’ the Galway outfit. Mr Scully spoke with unwavering assurance when citing these two elements as being the cause for revolutionising the competitive edge in the Galway side.

Thu, Sep 27, 2012
Lisa Regan predicts that if Galway prosper on Sunday and eclipse that 23 year that a dearh of positivity will radiate through the county. “If Galway won, it would put hurling back on the map and make it cool again. I’ve seen a newfound interest in our own club already. We’ve had eight to 10 new kids requesting to join so hopefully a revival will follow. I love all sports in general but in a county like Galway, particularly in the city, other sports often get more attention but if we won on Sunday I think things would change.”
It is simple to deduce that she has an untameable passion for Galway hurling and although she asserts that her interest comes voluntarily, the family factor is unmissable. Her brother currently occupies the pivotal centre back position, and being the daughter of the iconic Tony ‘The Horse’ Regan, an affiliation with hurling of some degree was always inevitable for Lisa Regan. However her devotion to Galway hurling to date delves deeper than just the familial connection. Her affection for hurling is cemented by her secretarial role in the Rahoon hurling club coupled with her contribution to the GHSC as PRO.

For students defeated by the nightlife and craving a midnight feast the Supermac's logo was a sight you could scarcely decipher. But the Supermac's label takes on a different form on the Galway jersey. For the Galway fans, there are few things more iconic than the Supermac's captioning the galway jersey in a calming and composed white font as opposed to the demonic red that the post CPs crew are more accustomed to.
Supermac's has enjoyed an alliance with the Galway Hurling association for years and unlike most other sponsorsihps, this is more than just about advertising the business. They have shared in the spoils of glory and shouldered the agony. All of those occasions are embroidered in those interwoven letters and they can be recalled intermittently with one fleeting glance at the Galway jersey.

When Kilkenny got on a run in the third quarter the last day, they were driven on by the brilliance of Brian Hogan and Tommy Walsh. Hogan plucked two or three in a row out of the air and you almost feel the intake of breath and anxiety in the Galway crowd in the Hogan Stand.

If fortune favours Galway next Sunday then the coveted Liam McCarthy cup will be sailing down the N17, a road immortalised by the Saw Doctors. Their manager, Ollie Jennings, has been the chief navigator in the success of this bodacious music group. His speciality is band management, but he is also a proud sports enthusiast. It wasn’t until he relocated to Ballinasloe that he became enthralled with hurling through a friendship he forged with the legendary centre-back, Sean Silke.
