This weekend the Tesco HomeGrown National Football Leagues enter the semi-final stages with four teams battling it out for a place in the final. Galway will feature in the second of the two contests when they travel to Banagher to meet opponents Kildare for a 2pm throw-in on Sunday, while Kerry face Westmeath on Saturday.
Galway’s earlier encounter with Kildare in the league finished in a draw, and considering the Tribeswomen delayed their resumption to training by six weeks, to have reversed a six-point deficit and carved out the draw is a positive reflection of the team’s resolve.

Despite the inevitable departures of a few key performers, Glynn has unearthed a string of promising youngsters. Ultimately that means Mervue are operating effectively, even if the standard of football in the domestic competition has dropped significantly.

Galway United Supporters’ Trust will host a night with Irish football legend and former Galway United manager Paddy Mulligan at the Galway Rovers Clubhouse, Claddagh, on Friday April 26 (8pm). Mulligan played 50 times for the Republic of Ireland and also lined out for Shamrock Rovers, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion. All are welcome - there is no admission charge.

Shane Walsh is a talented youngster. When he is in possession, he is very hard to tackle. Defenders back off him and things happen. He has speed and skill and two good feet. He hit 0-6 (3fs) last Saturday and he has notched 0-24 in the four championship games to date.

Craughwell AC celebrated a historic bronze medal in the national road relays in Raheny recently. The veteran men's team of Mark Davis, Gerry Ryan and Martin Corcoran won the Bronze in the M35 race in 20:00 exactly. The medal was a great achievement for the runners, whose average age is 47. Mark Davis ran the first leg with a stunning 4.53 mile split. Gerry Ryan took up the baton and duly ran the fastest two mile leg of the entire veterans’ event in 9:58, hauling the team up into third position. Martin Corcoran took the changeover with a decent, but not unassailable lead on the fourth-placed athletes, and found the reserves to hold off his challengers and win the bronze,surprised many by breaking the Dublin dominance in the event. Craughwell’s senior men, Jamie Fallon-Spellman, Conor Gillen, Neil Greaney and Jason Broderick finished in 14th place.
