Corofin favoured to stop Salthill collecting back-to-back titles

Salthill-Knocknacarra and Corofin meet on Sunday in the highly-anticipated county senior football final at Tuam Stadium at 4pm. The clash of the best two teams in the county has the potential to be a humdinger if both teams play to the best of their abilities.

Corofin are hotly fancied by the bookies to win their first title since 2011, and are 2/5 to collect the Frank Fox Cup. The current county champions, Salthill, under the guidance of Cathal McGinley, are available at 5/2 with Mulhollands.

The new Jes gym was christened as a basketball venue on Saturday night when a standing-room-only crowd witnessed Maree overcome favourites Titans in a nailbiter on the opening day of the National League division 1.

Titans, reinforced by off-season signings American Chris Coyne, Tomas Mitkus, who transferred from Maree, and Emmet Murphy from Ballincollig were clear favourites to win. And that appeared likely when Titans took a 35-20 lead by the middle of the second quarter over a depleted Maree squad, which included 16-year-old debutant Charlie Crowley.

Gary Thornton of Galway City Harriers is this year’s county 10km champion having won the Grey Lake 10k, hosted by Loughrea AC on Sunday.

Thornton finished in in 31 mins, just ahead of Irish Olympian Noel Berkeley who crossed the tape i 32:19. Matt Bidwell of Galway City Harriers was third in 33:55, and also claimed the men’s O40 title.
