Keady must plot a path for Galway to overcome well-known local stars

Women’s National League returns to Terryland on Sunday when Galway will host Dublin outfit Peamount in Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday (2pm ).

And Peamount, which are just two points ahead of Galway on the league table, features well-known Galwegians Julie Ann Russell and Dora Gorman.

The two senior internationals, who are studying in the capital, return to their native city to battle against a Galway outfit that fell to league leaders Raheny by 4-2 last weekend.

After back-to-back wins against Cork and Rovers, Galway were disappointed to lose to the defending champions at Morton Stadium, having led for nearly all the first half.

However manager Nigel Keady believes the fixture showed that Galway were able to compete at times against a strong Raheny.

“Peamount are another top side, peppered with international stars. We will learn from last week and the addition of the Galway girls on the Peamount side will really make it a special occasion.”

Galway shocked Raheny when taking the lead on six minutes after Ruth Fahy threaded a ball through to Lisa Casserly who finished past Niamh Reid Burke. This was the first time Raheny United had gone behind in 366 minutes of league football this season.

Raheny United, with six internationals in their starting line-up, pilled on the pressure, but WFC were able to hold them to long-range chances. However on the stroke of half time Claire Shine popped up to score, leaving the sides level at the break.

In the second half Raheny came out all guns blazing and after nine minutes took the lead through substitute Seana Cooke. After successive corners, the ball eventually fell to Cooke on the edge of the box and she fired home. There was no let up from United and on 60 minutes they extended their lead through Sinead O’Farrelly. After some good work by Caroline Thorpe, the ball broke to O’Farrelly who stuck from 25 yards.

On 76 minutes Claire Shine, having only been introduced as a substitute minutes earlier, was taken down in the box and Noelle Murray stepped up to slot home a penalty for the Dubliners. However Galway finished well when Becky Walsh broke from her left back position and finished with a worthy goal.
