Captain Conroy out of London clash

Galway have suffered a major blow ahead of their opening championship game this Sunday against London with captain Paul Conroy pulling out with injury.

Conroy, who was nominated for an All Star last season, has suffered a hairline fracture in his right metatarsal after a clash with Gary O’Donnell (Tuam Stars) at training.

Fallon secures breakthrough in 5,000m

There were some fantastic performances from Galway athletes at the Connacht Schools championships in Athlone, most notably in the senior boys’ 5000m where Jamie Fallon (Calasanctius Oranmore) scorched around the track in an incredible 15.04, a top-class time and a breakthrough performance for the young athlete, who also runs with Craughwell AC.

Craughwell athletes competing for schools provided many other highlights for the club, including a 1-2-3 in the minor girls’ long jump, domination of the girls sprints with victories in the minor 100m (Caoimhe O’Donoghue, Calasanctius), junior 100m and 200m (Michelle Duggan, Presentation Athenry) and intermediate 200m (Sineád Treacy, St Raphael's). It was a particularly successful day for Michelle Duggan who took three golds in 100m, 200m and 4x100m.

Galway FC must capitalise on momentum when Harps visit tomorrow

Galway FC, unbeaten in four SSE Airtricity League first division games, will return to Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow evening when Finn Harps visit the west.

The teams collided at the Dyke Road venue last Monday week in the EA Sports Cup when a Vinny Faherty goal sent Galway into the quarter-finals of that competition. Since then Harps defeated Cobh Ramblers in league action, while Galway required a fine Jake Keegan goal to earn a draw away to Shamrock Rovers B at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday.
