Casey in fine fettle
Regina Casey of Galway City Harriers continues her fine form in the annual County Galway 5km series with a third sucessive win.
Casey was first over the line in 18 minutes in the third race of the series held in Claregalway which attracted a huge field of almost 600 athletes. Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry was close behind in 18.11 with Mayo’s Colette Tuohy third in 18.52 in the women’s event.
GCH athlete Owen Byrne won well in a time of 16.25, half a minute clear of his club mate Conor Dolan in second with 16.52 and Timmy Glavey of Mayo AC, third in 17.02.
Race five, the penultimate of the series, takes place in Galway city at Ballybrit Racecourse this week.
AAI Track and Field Games
A number of Galway City Harriers athletes travelled to the AAI Games, the opening outdoor national track and field individual competition in Santry, Dublin. Sean Breathnach performed well in the discus and his brother Michael Breathnach threw 12.54m in the shot put and 44.8m in the javelin . Young sprinter Cillin Greene ran well with 22.9 in the 200m, as did Ronan Coyle (23.81 in 200m ), while Gary Thornton placed fourth in a competitive 3000m in 8.28. Craughwell athletes also competed, with Conor Gillen running 2.01 in the 800m.
Oughterard 8km
The annual Mayfly 8km took place in Oughterard with almost 100 participants taking to the start line. The race was won by a huge margin by Galway City Harriers Matt Bidwell in 33.43, from James Ferry in second and Larry Kelly third.The ladies’ event was won by Sinead Brody in an excellent time of 39.46 , from Deirdre Brophy and Sile Dirrane
Juvenile Track and Field
Day Two of the Galway Juvenile Track and Field Championships for the u-13 to u-19 age groups took place at Dangan Track on Saturday with more than 150 competitors from 10 Galway clubs.
Notable performances were posted by Sinead Treacy in the sprint events for Craughwell, and James Mitchell of GCH who clocked sub 11 in the 100m, as well as Laoise Geraghty and Aoife Sheehy of GCH in the distance events.
The 2014 Galway County Senior/Masters Track and Field championships will take place in Dangan, with day one on Sunday June 29.
