Job done for footballers in New York

The Galway senior footballers did what had to be done Stateside on Sunday when they easily defeated the home side by 2-18 to 0-8 to set up a Connacht quarter-final against Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon in two weeks (Sunday May 17).

It was Annaghdown’s Damien Comer who deserved the plaudits as he was inspirational in the full-forward line. It was good to have him back in action following his recent injury travails.

Galway gymnasts representing Ireland at the Celtic Cup were on the medal podium last weekend.

Kate Molloy, Aisling Fuller, Jane Heffernan and Emma Slevin were part of the Irish minors who took bronze at the competition which boasted teams from Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man and Northern Ireland, while Sarah Hynes and Emer Shimizu were also bronze medal winners on the Irish junior team.

Galway weightlifter Kieran Joyce hopes to celebrate a special one year anniversary with a Connacht title on May 2. The NUIG first year medical student took up weightlifting just a year ago and has already qualified for the European Junior Weightlifting Championships. NUI Galway has added another sports trophy to its cabinet with the women’s Alliance volleyball team winning this year’s cup final. NUIG, coached by Petre Stefanov, were 3-0 winners over Dublin Volleyball Club after a nailbiting final two sets. Lucie Ruzicková was named the Most Valuable Player of the match, joining Regina Halpin and Katerina Axaopoulou who were all nominated as All Stars for the league.
