Major fundraiser for Sunflower Chernobyl appeal this weekend

A fundraiser in aid of a multi-sensory facility for the Sunflower Chernobyl Appeal will take place this Saturday August 9. The fundraiser will take place in the Western Hotel, Prospect Hill, at 6.30pm and will have performances from Shane Warner, Cafe Minor, and Jackhammer Purr. There will also be live performance puppetry, juggling, and poetry.

Thirty months sentence for man following sex attack

A Polish national who sexually assaulted a Galway woman last year has been given a 30 months sentence by Mr Justice John Edwards at the Central Criminal Court.

Tomasz Wojtaniec (46) with an address at The Mayfly Inn, Oughterard, County Galway, was convicted by a jury earlier this month of sexually assaulting the woman as she walked home from a pub on May 9 2007.

A Galway transvestite was attacked in Galway city after spending an evening at the Blondie gig last Thursday. The man, who goes by the name of Sammy, was pushed to the ground outside the Front Door bar and had his pearl necklaces broken and his wig ripped off by a man who he claims was, “aggressive and extremely threatening,” and who also needed a lot of restraining.

Major funding boost announced for Galway sports clubs

A total of 45 sporting clubs in Galway city and county are to benefit from grants totalling €1,722,500 from the Department of Arts, Sports, and Tourism.

Our Lady’s Boy Club Ltd will receive €120,000, Ahascragh/Fohenagh Hurling Club €100,000, Skehana Community Development €100,000, Kilnadeema Leitrim GAA Club €90,000, while Ballinasloe GAA Club and Oughterard AFC will each receive €80,000.
