Galwegians will be able to have their say on the Draft City Development Plan 2011 - 2017 once it goes on public display at the end of this month.

The Draft Development Plan was discussed at Monday’s city council meeting. Among its recommendations are that 30 per cent of the proposed developments to the Docks and to Ceannt Station be residential and that 20 per cent of these units be for social and affordable housing.

Galway city is due to get a consignment of salt to grit the roads despite the fact the thaw is over, a situation which has led to councillor Pádraig Conneely calling City Hall “a joke”.

However the Mayor of Galway Declan McDonnell has praised the work of Galway City Council staff in “keeping the city open and moving” during the cold snap, and the many local people who helped grit the roads around the city’s estates last weekend.

Last year was one to forget in terms of crime in the city. In the Spring, we had to listen to the harrowing details of how Manuela Riedo met her end. In the midst of the Volvo Ocean race, we had the killing of young Kieran Cunningham on a night out with his pals. As I write this, another young man fights for his life in a Dublin hospital after being assaulted in the city at the end of the year.

So we could be forgiven for hoping that the New Year would bring a welcome respite from the sort of headlines not normally associated with this city. How wrong could we have been? Just half an hour into the New Year when the city was revelling, as the decade came to an end and another began, the ugly side of Galway came to the fore once again.
