Red Cross fund available to Galway flood victims

The Irish Red Cross has made €1 million available to alleviate hardship caused to families whose houses were flooded last November.

Fine Gael Galway East TD Paul Connaughton is encouraging people to apply for the funding. He also said the distribution of funds will not be associated with any other payments provided by the Government fund administered by community welfare officers.

The closing date for applications is Friday January 22 and application forms can be downloaded from www.redcross.ie Applicants must verify that their house was flooded and this can be done by a note from the local community welfare officer, garda, fire brigade, etc. If such verification is not sent in with the application, the Red Cross will not carry out an assessment.

“It is expected the payment per household will be small,” said Dep Connaughton, “given the huge numbers involved in the worst flooding crisis in 50 years but nevertheless people who had their houses flooded should apply.”

Dep Connaughton also praised the work of the Red Cross in dealing with the November flooding in Co Galway.
